This is an MTH 30-4184-1 Norfolk and Western 4-8-4 Bantam J Steam Passenger R-T-R Train Set w/Proto-Sound 2.0. This Set Includes: 4-8-4 J Steam Engine (30-004e), RK 40' Double Door Box Car (30-004b), RR Gondola w/LCL Containers (30-004c), RR Offset Steel Caboose (30-004d), 12 Piece RealTrax Oval, 100 watt Power Supply With Controller, Lighted Track Lock-On, and a RailWare DVD Rom. Often called The Last Steam Railroad in America, the Norfolk & Western relied totally on steam power until well into the 1950s, when most other railroads had already converted to diesels. The N&W's loyalty to steam was prompted by two factors. The N&W was mainly a coal-hauling railroad with most of its trackage in Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio, so fuel was abundant and cheap. Perhaps more important, the N&W built some of the best steam engines ever made, in its own shops in Roanoke, VA. Among the finest of these was the Class J, a streamlined greyhound that could cruise at well over 90 mph. One of these massive 4-8-4 Northerns survives today at the Virginia Museum of Transportation, not far from the shops where it was born. This item has been graded per TCA standards C-7: Excellent based on visual appearance. There are light nicks and scratches on the surface of the shell and chassis. The overall appearance of this item may be improved with a gentle and thorough cleaning. The original boxes are included. The instruction manual is not included. The locomotive did not run when tested, but the tender made sound effects. Due to the date of manufacture, the buyer may need to replace the battery.
