Lionel Vintage O Gauge 2-6-2 Steam Locomotives: 224 & 2026 [2] VG
The Lionel 224 Vintage O Gauge Postwar 2-6-2 Die-Cast Steam Locomotive from the 1940s. The 224 is one of the few Lionel engines made in both the Prewar and Postwar eras. It features a die cast metal body, rounded cab floor, motor, 3-position E-Unit, and an operating headlight. It does not have a smoke unit, which is why it was dropped from the Lionel line after 1946 and replaced by the smoking 675/2025 engines.
The 2026 was classified by Lionel as a Prairie-type steam engine. It's a mid-size steam engine and was sold as an 027 gauge item. The early 2026 is a fancier locomotive compared to the later version. In addition, the 2026 shares its boiler casting with other Lionel locomotives such as the 637, 2016, 2018, 2029 and 2037 steamers: however the internal workings are different. The 2026 steam locomotive had two independent production runs. The first was in 1948 and 1949 while the second was from 1951 to 1953. Although Lionel used the same catalogue number (2026), in most cases parts are not interchangeable between the early and late version. The first version consisted of a 2-6-2 wheel arrangement with detailed driving wheel hardware, three-position E-unit, smoke, Baldwin disk drive wheels, die-cast trailing truck, sliding shoe contacts plus an ornamental bell and whistle and illuminated headlight. The whistling tender which matches was numbered 6466WX. Externally, the later model looks very similar to the earlier model. Internally, there are numerous differences. The later model has a 2-6-4 wheel arrangement with scaled-down driving wheel hardware, three-position E-unit, smoke, relatively plain spoked drive wheels, sheet metal trailing truck, ornamental bell, and illuminated headlight.
This item has been graded per TCA standards C-6: Very Good based on visual appearance. These items are being sold as-is because the 2026 did not run properly. The 224 is missing a set of wheels & therefore wasn't able to be tested. There are nicks, scratches, and scuffs along the locomotives. The wheels show heavy signs of previous wear. There are also spots of surface rust/tarnishing along the wheels and axels on both locomotives. The overall appearance of this item may be improved with a gentle and thorough cleaning. The instruction manuals and original boxes are not included with these items. Please check the photos for a detailed look at this item.
